My thief can currently do this: Sneak attack + 2 offhand attacks + action surge + another attack == 4 attacks, that each does around ~30 dmg with hand x-bows + 1. It's insane. Fighter gives you ranged proficiency at level 1, action surge at lvl 2. Thief gives you one extra bonus action (translated into offhand attack).

Oct 21, 2006 · Ah, ok I get your point now. You're right, 5e's Crossbow Expert doesn't remove the need for a free hand for reloading. Still, you could be wielding two hand crossbows as long as they're pre-loaded and then attack with both in a given round, but you wouldn't be able to do the same thing the next round I guess.
