Melee isn't bad but it just takes forever to level, especially if you don't have the endgame god dungeon gear. Ranged is super quick to level. You want to level both magic and ranged for different situations. Ranged gear gives you high magic def and lets you kill magic enemies super fast without wasting a ton of food.
