If you place the items in the chests during non-working hours the farmer will not know they are there. The items your farmer needs are hoes, bags, fertilizer, seeds, sickles, or scythes.

Before the Shed was added with v1.5.0.0, the Barns had 4/6/8 workplaces for Barnworkers and/or Farmers! Or in other words: The Shed is nothing else than a smaller version of the old Tier 1-Barn!
